about

ABOUT HÄXAN
A hybrid of documentary and fiction, this silent film explores the history of witchcraft, demonology and satanism. It shows representations of evil in a variety of ancient and medieval artworks, offers vignettes illustrating a number of superstitious practices and presents a narrative about the persecution of a woman accused of witchcraft. The film ends by suggesting that the modern science of psychology offers important insight into the beliefs and practices of the past. Release date: May 27, 1929

"Häxan is one of those cult films that once you've seen it, you just can't shake it. The vision that Benjamin Christensen set forth in 1922, still holds equally as visually striking and impactful today.  As fans of the film as well as the themes of the Occult and Witchcraft in general, Cemetery Gates was more than excited to get the opportunity to re-conceptualize what the film's score might have sounded like if composed in modern-day horror-score fashion.

Using all analog and modular synthesizers, Cemetery Gates explores the themes of the film scene by scene, ranging from soft and subtle piano-driven tracks or a single airy floating synth line to chaotic, heavy, and dense modular growls and relentless modular percussion. This album is best experienced through headphones." –Cemetery Gates

ABOUT CEMETERY GATES
Cemetery Gates is the moniker of long-time writing duo Gene Priest and Derek Jones. The idea behind the project was born out of their collective love of ‘70’s and ‘80’s horror film scores, as well as synthesizer driven electronic music from artists such as Depeche Mode, New Order and The Postal Service.

The collaborative idea was to mix the styles of instrumental film score style music, with a touch of the darker side of electronic pop with vocals and lyrical content surrounding life, death, anxiety, nightmares, and everything in between.

This mix has produced 2 Eps of synthesizer heavy music accompanied by ghostly vocals and haunting melodies, as well as a full length of all instrumental “horror theme” inspired tracks with titles that pay homage to horror films old and new with the purpose of keeping the classic horror score vibe alive and moving forward with a new spin.
